Visit/lecture at The Chapel of Our Lady of the Crag with Dr Chris Maunder
Event Details
Discover Knaresborough’s Grade 1 listed Marian chapel, carved in the cliff on Abbey Road, a stone’s throw from the River Nidd. It was built by John the Mason in 1408, with permission being granted by King Henry IV. The Chapel was a wayside shrine for pilgrims walking between the town and a Trinitarian Priory located further downstream. It would also have been a place of quiet and prayer for the quarrymen working in the nearby quarry.
Sense the peace and spiritual atmosphere of this unique medieval shrine and its surrounding delightful garden. At 12.00 and 14.00, expert Dr Chris Maunder, retired Senior Lecturer of St John’s York University, will give a 20-minute lecture on ‘Pilgrimage and the Virgin Mary.’ The Chapel is situated next to the bizarre House In the Rock, built 1770 to 1786, by an eccentric weaver, Thomas Hill.
