Douglas Black Artist Open Studio

Event Details

Douglas is opening his studio to show bold, playful papercut artworks, cutting templates, works in progress and finished pieces.

Most of his papercuts begin freehand. Rather than working from a detailed drawing, he often cuts directly into the paper and allows the image to emerge through the process. Shapes evolve, connect and grow, creating images that sit between observation, memory, imagination and discovery.

His work draws on landscape, folklore, myth and the natural world. Some pieces are inspired by particular places, such as The Strid on the River Wharfe near Bolton Abbey. Others develop from patterns, dreams, stories and natural forms. He is interested in how simple shapes can suggest movement, atmosphere, energy and emotion.

As part of feva 2026, Douglas Black is running a relaxed two-hour introduction to papercutting at Bravo Studios.
