Trapped in the amber of the moment
Event Details
Studio Tanacetum is the live/work space of Sherry Doyal, who hosts Hilary Holmes, a hand-painted and kiln-fired glass artist.
This window exhibition invites viewers into the world of paleo botany, combining art and science to explore the fossil record and ancient plant life. Sherry, a basketmaker recognised by the Crafts Council, exhibits coiled pine needle basketry embellished with amber and rosin, alongside prints from “living fossils” such as the Ginkgo biloba.
Hilary Holmes complements the display with stained glass artworks painted to mimic inclusions in fossilised amber. Her work reflects a contemporary medieval aesthetic, with themes of nature, the cosmos, and mythic figures. Additional artworks and botanical sketchbooks are available to view inside.
Sherry Doyal creates fine craft and art inspired by botany and natural materials, with current work influenced by Marie Stopes’ Ancient Plants (1910).
Hilary Holmes is a North Yorkshire-based stained glass artist since 2019. Her painted work draws on flora, fauna, the weather, and celestial themes. Known for her signature copper foiled fish, each piece is uniquely shaped from salvaged glass.
